4 Things To Keep In Mind If You Are Involved In An Auto Accident

Posted on | March 11, 2010 | No Comments

Most likely, at some point in our lives, the majority of us will be involved in an auto accident. Even if you are not injured in the accident, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

If you have been injured, it is a good idea to consult with a Freehold New Jersey injury lawyer about your rights.

1. Don’t Leave The Scene – It is very important that after the accident has occurred, you stay at the scene until law enforcement arrives and lets you know that you can go. Leaving the scene of the auto accident can result in driver’s license suspensions and even criminal charges in some situations.

2. Exchange Information – You will want to get the following information:

  • Other drivers involved – Their names, addresses, insurance information, license plates, and driver’s license information.
  • Any witnesses who saw the accident – Their name, address, and phone.
  • Other relevant information – This may include the location where the accident occurred, any notes about the circumstances surrounding the accident, and any law enforcement you talked to.

3. Don’t Admit It Was Your Fault – This is important. Even in the event that you think you might have been at fault, do not admit this. There may be extenuating circumstances and factors that played a part in the accident that you are not aware of. It could be that another driver was more at fault. Wait until all the facts play out and let law enforcement sort out the event after gathering all the necessary information.

4. Visit A Doctor – It’s important that you see a doctor after the accident to make sure you haven’t sustained any injuries. Sometimes the shock and adrenaline after the auto accident can hide injuries that have occurred. If you have been injured as a result of the accident and sue the other driver, they can argue your injuries were not caused by the accident if you haven’t seen a doctor.
